Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022: sustainability centerstage

Everything is set for Salone del Mobile.Milano, which is celebrating its 60 anniversary this year from June 7-12, 2022. Even though it isn’t taking place in April, the idea is just the same. Hosted at the Fiera Milano Rho, the event is curated by Maria Porro, the President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, who has taken over from Claudio Luti. All 24 pavilions are sold out with over 2000 exhibitors, including 600 under-35 designers.

“The Salone del Mobile has always been a catalyst for creativity, positivity and energy. It generates beauty, inclusion and new opportunities,” stated Porro during the presentation of the Salone. The clear theme of this edition is sustainability. In fact, all of the stands are going for reusable materials, upcycling and a low environmental impact.

Unsurprisingly, the Design With Nature installation designed by Mario Cucinella stands out this year. Located in pavilion 15 from S.Project, it puts a virtuous 1,400-sqm ecosystem on display representing the ideal future of home design. “If the events of the last few years have helped us rediscover the importance of sociality and sharing,” commented the architect, “this sense has yet to strike a balance with what is around us, the spaces we live in and the territories we occupy and the resources available to us.”

The future will also be the focus of the SaloneSatellite with Designing for our future selves: a brand-new layout focusing on the square as a meeting place which is ready to create new collaborations between international design schools, the young, startups and businesses.

Meanwhile, the biennial EuroCucina (with the FTK: Technology For the Kitchen side event) and the Salone Internazionale del Bagno are the side events which stand out in the Fiera spaces. They focus on the home as a multifunctional space which is becoming more and more hybrid and fluid. That’s why technology is becoming more resilient, accessible and easily integrated and integrable into our daily lives, while spaces are getting renovated with sustainability and wellbeing in mind.

Additionally, there is the Talk schedule which has been curated by Chiara Alessi, Maria Cristina Didero and Beatrice Leanza. They will moderate a series of debates and meetings with the most interesting voices in contemporary design.
