Milano Design Week 2023: a guide for getting around (regularly updated)

It might be the spring air, or it might be the three difficult years behind us, but the return of Milano Design Week 2023 in “its” regular month of April has got us hyped.

So, as we eagerly plan our visit to the Salone del Mobile and map out the spots of the Fuorisalone, we know that we will need comfortable shoes with all the wonderful things to see!

EXHIBITORS

At this Salone del Mobile, trade fairs, Euroluce, Salone Satellite and concurrent events, there will be almost 2,000 exhibitors including brands, up-and-coming talents and design schools.

New this year

The press conference which took place in mid-February already unveiled three key new additions to the Salone del Mobile 2023:

  • A single exhibitor floor
  • A new layout for Euroluce 2023
  • New interdisciplinary content within the Euroluce spaces

There is a single floor for all the exhibitors to make the visit simpler and highlight all of the pavilions. This choice of redesigning the spaces goes hand in hand with the idea of providing a circular route for Euroluce to offer a better and smarter experience. We can’t wait to check it out! Furthermore, the Euroluce spaces will host the event’s cultural activities: interdisciplinary and experiential contents, exhibits, talks, workshops, and site-specific installations with architecture, art, and design themes.

Euroluce 2023

Euroluce’s new circular exhibition layout is one of the most anticipated new additions at Milano Design Week 2023. The project was designed by Lombardini22, the famous Milanese architecture and engineering studio, with the goal of creating greater visibility for the exhibiting companies and a new and engaging experience for visitors.

There will be four darkened pavilions to allow the public to fully enjoy the lighting as they are led along a fluid and optimized pathway. The space will be improved both for the stands and the event route for “better crowd and area management”

Lombardini22 has designed the exposition area like a city with “shop windows”, bars, restaurants, benches and relaxation areas, all while being lit up by the magic of the best designer lighting.

When and where? The 31st edition of Euroluce will take place at the same as the Salone del Mobile at Rho Fiera from April 18th-23rd at pavilions 9, 11, 13 and 15.

Milano Design Week 2023 in the city: the Fuorisalone

Practical information for the Fuorisalone 2023

WHEN

April 17-23, 2023

WHERE

In Milan’s design districts: Brera Design District, Tortona Rocks, BASE Milano, Superstudio, Tortona Design Week, Milano Durini Design, 5VIE and Isola Design District.

ADMISSION

The Fuorisalone is loaded with events, some of which are free, others which include mandatory recording permission, and some which are few pay-to-enter or invite-only. We recommend looking into admission on the Fuorisalone website or the official pages of each site.

“Future Lab”

How do we imagine our future? In this historical moment it isn’t easy (or better, it would be a mistake) to ignore the huge global issues we are forced to confront: climate change, the energy crisis, new wars, political instability. So, in this moment more than ever, thinking about the future means finding solutions to these challenges and truly ecological and inclusive projects.

Milano Design Week 2023 is not shying away from its role and is, in fact, hosting a Future Lab in which architects, designers, and artists can contribute to the search for new production models and lifestyles.

So, what will we see in this Fuorisalone 2023? Lots of projects, installations, and prototypes which will be both reflections of social transformations and visions into the future: design both as a lens and an agent of change.

The keywords at these events will be sustainability, circular economy, material innovation, urban renewal, and artificial intelligence.

The Fuorisalone Awards

The Fuorisalone Awards are dedicated to the most memorable events of Milano Design Week 2023. This year we can once again vote for our favorite event via a soon-to-be-announced method.

We already know, however, that the most popular projects will compete for the 4 special mentions which will be awarded by this year’s jury in the categories of interaction, sustainability, technology, and communication.

Plus, there is an interesting new addition to this edition of the Fuorisalone Awards: the special mention from Salone del Mobile.Milano and Euroluce which will recognize the lighting project with the biggest impact on the public. Will it be public lighting, lighting art, or an installation to win the brightest of the awards?

Districts, routes, events

The official guide to the Fuorisalone events will soon be online. We have, however, already put together a little useful gift for you to easily get around the city: a Google Map to download and save with all the most important places saved in the categories of EXHIBITIONS, INSTALLATIONS, and SHOWROOMS. Have no fear: we will keep updating it until April 17 with the latest announcements!

The highlight: the Fuorisalone Oracle

A small yet brilliant project which will soon be available for free online was announced at the February 28th press conference. The Fuorisalone Oracle is a deck of cards illustrated by Serena Mazzi and produced by Tiburtini which has been designed as an instrument for designers to help them find inspiration and stimulate creativity. You’ll find all the information here.
