Lago design: new releases and timeless pieces

Lago needs no introductions as it has been furnishing homes, hotels, restaurants, and offices for half a century with pieces of furniture which have gone on to become cult classics. To get an idea of the spirit of Lago’s design, take a look at their 11-point manifesto which speaks about simplicity, beauty, human relationships, and creativity. Still, it keeps on evolving, and we fell in love once again with its new releases from this year.

Minimalist lines and modularity: the trademarks of Lago design

Lago’s production can be best described with two words: minimalism and modularity.

Minimalism means that the majority of its projects are developed with simple, rigorous, and squared lines. For example, the Air line (tables, beds, and other furniture) is made up of sheets of transparent tempered-glass which perfectly support orthogonal surfaces and almost disappear from sight. Plus, there is the brilliant minimalist 36e8 system, which is one of the company’s greatest successes: containers, wall units, shelves, bathroom furniture built around a simple 36.8 cm square piece. Then the base module gets multiplied, paired with other elements, and redesigned with various materials to create infinite compositions for any space.

Meanwhile, modularity means seeing furniture as a versatile and fluid subject which must be able to adapt to various spaces and people. Each new element is a potential building block for an infinite system. We like the idea of a home built like a city with its own skyline, “blocks”, or “neighborhoods” which get put together with various models, and the possibility of it changing and expanding just like a city.

Innovation in materials

However, let’s not make the mistake of thinking that a company with such a strong design identity is incapable of reimagining itself! In fact, we have admired Lago’s work in carrying out meticulous research into new materials and finishes. This year in particular, the use of glass and XGlass technology, which was introduced some years ago and is constantly evolving, has provided us with some truly spectacular projects. Here are just two examples: the 36e8 Glass kitchen is an imposing monolith with transparent displays which looks as if they have been encased in marble; and there is the animalier line which covers furniture in artificial snake and crocodile leather with a glossy finish. Lastly, the sartorial quality of the company’s sofas and the search for the perfect upholstery are at the foundations of lines like Happening and Soft.
