Calamaio by Oluce: the freely moving desk lamp

One of the new releases unveiled at Euroluce, Calamaio is a minimalist desk lamp which features sleek lines and Oluce’s trademark discrete design.

It takes its name from the Italian for inkwell and its shape evokes the elegance and simplicity of writing tools from the past. The name is also a reference to its use, as this functional desk lamp is meant to interact with its user and act as a trusty companion while studying or working.

The desk lamp created at the Sapienza University in Rome

The Calamaio lamp is a product of a collaboration between Oluce and workshop at a Master’s in Lighting Design held at the Sapienza Università in Rome.

Created by three young designers, Marco Cervelleri, Giulia Di Lorenzo, and Giacomo Montini, Calamaio was selected by the company and presented for the first time to the public at Euroluce during Milano Design Week 2023. After this event, the desk lamp officially entered into Oluce’s prestigious catalog.

Let’s take a closer look at the details of this lamp which, despite its young age, promises to become one of the legendary Milanese company’s new icons.

The features of the Calamaio desk lamp

As we mentioned, Calamaio is a light and flexible lamp made entirely in metal. It is made up of a circular base and two slender cylindrical stems connected by a pivot that allows the lamp head to be oriented.

Everything is adjustable on the Calamaio. The head can be placed up high or down below and the stem on the circular base also swivels, allowing for complete control of the light. The head hosts an LED light source and creates a directed light beam.

Its austerity and geometric purity are also highlighted by its color options which range from scarlet red, mustard yellow, and satin black nickel.
