The iconic Spider lamp turns 60 in a Yellow Mustard look

In 1965, one of the key figures in world design, Joe Colombo, created the iconic Spider collection, a family of lamps which would leave an indelible mark on the contemporary lighting scene.

Now, almost 60 years later, to celebrate its 60th anniversary, Oluce has introduced a new, fascinating, and elegant version in a special Yellow Mustard look.

Spider:  an unconventional lamp

It was in the fervor of the Italian economic boom that Joe Colombo conceived of the Spider lamp—the icon of originality and modernity which successfully captured the spirit of the age. The strength of this industrial-style lamp lies in the audacious way it overcomes conventional design and creates a new and captivating aesthetic language.

The strength of the project, common to all of Joe Colombo’s products for Oluce, lies in the desire to think outside the box in order to create a new aesthetic language.

The designer experimented with forms through new materials, the use of color, and the search for advanced technological solutions, leading to the creation of new lighting devices which challenged traditional design.

The Spider lamp’s construction details

The Spider table lamp features a single luminaire in metal which has specifically been designed to host a horizontal spot light bulb. The luminaire is mounted onto an elegant chromed vertical rod via a joint.

Moreover the reflector can be adjusted in height down the rod to the circular metal base which comes in the same color. The versatile Spider family includes both table and floor lamps which are available in a classic black finish and in a new, vibrant yellow mustard.

An award-winning lamp

In 1967, two years after going into production, the Spider lamp received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award from the ADI, cementing its status as a design icon.

Since then, it has found a place in homes and in museums around the world, becoming an integral part of the permanent collections of the Triennale di Milano, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Kunstmuseum in Düsseldorf, and the “Neue Sammlung” museum in Munich.

In 1972, it stood out among the works shown at the famous exhibit at the MoMa in New York called “Italy: the New Domestic Landscape“, contributing to the international success of Italian design.
